The conflict in the story is between Kino and the pearl. His wife Juana warns him that it is evil and should be thrown back into the ocean, but he is too stubborn and greedy to do it.
When the book begins it is a calm soothing setting. Kino is describing life and the wonderful song of the family. Juana is preparing breakfast and making corncakes.
