Cultural Revolution: Desaster and Distruction
"Marxism consists of thousands of truths, but these truths can be summarized in the statement: It is right to rebel against reactionaries" Mao Zedong Although Mao Zedong is known for bringing together the people of China before, during, and after the Chinese communist revolution, he actually caused mass economic disaster and was responsible for the death of tens of millions of innocent people. Mao had several good ideas that can be rationalized to some extent such as the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Great Leap Forward. However, these Campaigns turned our for the worst. As a child Mao enjoyed the life of a rich peasant family. There was always enough to eat and a warm house and his parents could afford a good education for him (Major 49). In 1911, while in his mid-twenty's, Mao joined the Revolutionary Army in Hunan Province where he served for many years (Britannica 805). In 1919, while attending Peking University, Mao took part in the May Fourth Movement. The May Fourth Movement was inspired by the Treaty of Versailles because under the Treaty the Chinese land taken by the Germans was not to be returned to China, but instead it was to be given to the Japanese. The news reached China on May Second and two days later stud
From 1949 to 1959 Mao served as the Chairman of The people's Republic Of China (Britannica 805). In 1959 Mao stepped down from the seat of power but still remained active in the Party and still held more power than any other person in the party. Mao continued to run the country until 1963 when, after making several bad choices, he was removed from power in the Party (Wikipedia "Maoism" 1). After being taken from power Mao was not through with what he had been hoping to do. He still viewed the country as needing to make a clean break from its old ways and customs. By this time the rest of the modern world had cars and trains, roads and computers, and other things which China had never dreamed of. Mao saw this and realized that the people of China were living in the past and that if they were ever to become a large power in the world he had to step in and change the way China was being run. In 1963 Mao's plan to collectivize agriculture had seriously backfired. Mao planned to make China self sufficient and thus decreed that all people would spend a small portion of time out in the fields harvesting crops. He figured that if everyone went out and worked very hard for a short amount of time then others would be free to fill jobs in China such as the development of technology. Mao's plan worked for a short time but then people stopped working and stopped producing and the system fell apart. Fewer products were being produced than at any other time in the recent history of China. But Mao was sure that his plan would work and pushed it even harder than before. This action served only to drive his program into the ground. By Mao refusing to accept that he had been wrong about his agricultural plan, he caused the starvation and eventual deaths of 23 million people as the country went without food for several weeks (Wikipedia "Maoism" 1). In 1921 Mao, still dissatisfied with the Chinese government, grouped together several friends and personal supporters and formed the Chinese Communist Party (Major 53). The Communist Party was secret for a few years but then Cheng Kai Shek took Power in China and formed th
