Slaughter House 5

In Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut incorporated many places and time frames. Earth and Tralfamadore are the two main places and also contain many differences. Earth symbolizes reality in many senses, while Tralfamadore symbolizes fantasy. Unlike Earth, Tralfamadore is a utopian society, while Earth is in war.

Earth symbolizes reality in the story. Reality consists life, love, hatred, and death. In the story, the birth of Billy in 1922 symbolizes newly acquired life. Also, World War II could symbolize hatred and death. Much hatred was also consumed by Weary's friend, Paul Lazzaro, because of the false information given to him by Weary himself. Death can also be symbolized by the result of Paul's hatred, which was the assassination of Billy on February 13, 1976. Love is symbolized by Billy and Valencia Merble in 1948, when they exchanged wedding vows. All of these 'semi-symbols' are a part of reality, in which, in this case is symbolized by Earth.

Tralfamadore symbolized the fantasy of a utopian world, the perfect society. The perfect world where there were no sadness or any kind of emotion. The fourth-dimension that they attain symbolizes the Tralfamadorians l


In conclusion, Earth and Tralfamadore are the two places in Kurt Vonnegut's, Slaughterhouse-Five, where all of the action takes place. The Earth symbolizes reality because of emotions such as love and hatred, such as the love between Billy and Valencia when they married, and the Paul's hatred towards Billy when he was told that Billy cause his friends death. Life and death are also reasons why Earth is symbolized as reality. Tralfamadore, however, symbolizes fantasy. It symbolized a utopian race in which extremities were a necessity, and where emotions were non-existent due to the fact that they see in four dimensions. These differences in lifestyles are important in the story because they give the reader something to think about. It makes the readers think that maybe that will be their own race in the future. It makes the reader broaden their horizon and maybe not just think worldly, but universally instead.
