A detailed Summary of Defence Mechanisms

I believe that I use a complex of all defensive mechanisms mentioned in the lecture, just as everybody else. However, until I encountered psychology, I wasn't aware that very often the way I acted was a situation when I used a defensive mechanism from psychological point of view.

For instance, now I realize that I use rationalization as a way to find an explanation for issues that bother me or to defend myself in situations that don't follow the course I want. Very often, when I can't get what I want I try to comfort myself by looking on the bright side of the things. For example, if I plan to go somewhere, and something happens that I can't make it, I try to think positive and find the advantages of the situation. I say to myself: "Well, I can't go there indeed, but that's fine! I have nothing to lose. There are so many things I have to do here, and the weather is going to be bad. So, I'm better off staying at home and do my home works. I can go there some other time after all." This situation in fact refers to something that is happening to me today. I had a plan to go to Florida for the weekend with my girlfriend and come back on Tuesday. The idea occurred last week. I was at work and I found out that I was off the entire wee

k. I decided to go somewhere with my girlfriend because both of us had been working a lot recently, and we thought we really needed to spend some time together. We chose Florida, made reservations in a hotel, rented a car and bought plain tickets. Surprisingly, yesterday I was called by my manager, and I was told that today ( Monday ) there was a staff meeting at my work, which I had to attend. In the beginning when I heard that I was really angry, but in a while I decided that there was something good about it and now I'm working on my assignment, which would have been a lot simpler if I had made that trip. Another example when I use this type of defense mechanism is when I listen to Rap Music, which I don't rally prefer, but as it is everywhere around us I have no choice but to enjoy some of the songs. The music is full with bad language, explicit lyrics, and negativism but still, I say to myself that it is not a big deal when I listen to it only for fun.

I thing, that I did the right thing in that case, unconsciously using my humor defense mechanism. I could just have yelled at my roommate and made a big fuss about what had happened, but I chose to find a better way to deal with him.

It is hard to recall many examples of that age. How ever I remember when I was in the kindergarten, and every day we were taken out to play. There were few kids that I got along with. They were my best friends. We had and interesting game. We took grass and earth and we pretended that we cooked meals out of that mixed with little stones. We would use little pieces of broken tiles and pretended that they were dishes. After a preparation of the meals we pretended that we fed some little dolls or the imaginary friends, whom we talked to.

A few days ago, he left our apartment unlocked. On the same day the landlord decided to come over and check some minor problems that needed his attention. He rang the bell several times, and after nobody answered, he decided to come in anyway, as he had a key. When he found that the apartment was unlocked, he called me. I was on my way home anyway, so when I arrived home he was there. I offered him a cup of coffee and as we spoke he made some remarks about the safety of the building and the fact that our apartment in particular was easily accessibl
