Count of Monte Cristo

Alexandre Dumas', The Count of Monte Cristo, is an incredible story that combines adventure, revenge, and suspense. It takes you through the incredible life of Edmond Dantes. At 19 years old, Dantes lives almost the perfect life. He is engaged to a beautiful woman, he is about to become the captain of a ship, and he is well liked by almost everyone who knows him. His perfect life draws jealously from some of his so-called friends, especially his best friend, Fernand Mondego. Fernand is in love with Dantes' fiance and envies his success. Fernand, Danglars, and Caderousse draft a letter accusing Dantes of treason. On the day of his wedding, Dantes is arrested for his supposed crimes. Dantes is sent to prison for life at the notorious Chateau d'If. While in prison, Dantes meets Abbe Faria, a priest and scholar. Faria teaches Dantes everything he knows turning him into a well-educated man. Faria and Dantes meticulously plan for escape. He pretends to injure himself and his best friend on the ship, Jacopo, decides to stay with him on the island. When the smugglers come back to pick up Dantes, he fills his pocket with a few precious stones and later buys a boat and crew for Jacopo. Jacopo goes and finds out information about Dantes father and fiance, Mercedes. Dantes returns to the island with a yacht that he fills with the treasure. Disguised as an Italian priest, Dantes travels back to Marseilles and pays a visit to Caderousse. He then learns the details of the plot to kill him and that Fernand married Mercedes. Ten years later, Dantes emerges in Rome as the Count of Monte Cristo where he sets his elaborate scheme of revenge into motion.
