Poetry Comparison: Loneliness in Music
Loneliness and its sufferings have been expressed in many poems and songs by many poets and artists. One of the great examples where a song explains about loneliness is Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, which is composed by the Backstreet Boys in 1999. In this song, the Backstreet Boys sings about a loss of a person in one’s life and how that is meant to the certain person. It explains the point in life where one is lonely, by giving their meaning loneliness. Another good example is also a song called, I Want You Back by ‘N Sync, which they composed in 1997. ‘N Sync also sings about a loss of a person in a way through a loving relationship between friends breaking up. Their song describes the reason of the breakup, and how the person will try to win his/her lover back. Although their way of expressing loneliness is quite different from the Backstreet Boys, it uses the same general idea of being lonely. In comparison, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely by the Backstreet Boys is a written more successfully about loneliness than I Want You Back by ‘N Sync, varying in many reasons such as the use of poetic terms, the imagery it gives to the listeners, and the actual structure of how the song is written.
