Poetry Comparison: Loneliness in Music

Loneliness and its sufferings have been expressed in many poems and songs by many poets and artists. One of the great examples where a song explains about loneliness is Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, which is composed by the Backstreet Boys in 1999. In this song, the Backstreet Boys sings about a loss of a person in one's life and how that is meant to the certain person. It explains the point in life where one is lonely, by giving their meaning loneliness. Another good example is also a song called, I Want You Back by 'N Sync, which they composed in 1997. 'N Sync also sings about a loss of a person in a way through a loving relationship between friends breaking up. Their song describes the reason of the breakup, and how the person will try to win his/her lover back. Although their way of expressing loneliness is quite different from the Backstreet Boys, it uses the same general idea of being lonely. In comparison, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely by the Backstreet Boys is a written more successfully about loneliness than

I Want You Back by 'N Sync, varying in many reasons such as the use of poetic terms, the imagery it gives to the listeners, and the actual structure of how the song is written. Given these fact

Both songs composed give a good theme and title to help their song come alive. However, the Backstreet Boys' idea of theme and title has a greater meaning. One can see this by comparing the title of both songs. The first song title, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, is a good example of a reasonable title for loneliness. The word Lonely is already included, which makes it more specific. It literally tells what the song is about, and the title makes the listeners wonder what being lonely really means. The second song I Want You Back by 'N Sync is a poor title of loneliness compared to Backstreet Boys. The title is too general, and the meaning can be taken by other ways. When listeners of 'N Sync look at the title, they wouldn't know what it's about besides being something to do with love. This makes the title of this song not as effective as the title of Backstreet Boys. Backstreet Boys created its title so that people will understand what the song is trying to say and the idea of the contents when looking at the title of the song, which makes it a better title than 'N Sync. Second of all, one can understand the comparison of the song by looking at the theme. Again, the Backstreet Boys surpasses 'N Sync in this matter. In Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely, the theme of the song is that it hurts to be lonely and sometimes it's better to be with the person one loves than to be alone. It explains how the person feels when one is lonely, which is experienced by everyone. As a result, it has an influence on all of us. With I Want You Back, the theme is that being without a lover makes the person lonely, which in return wants the lover back to have happiness. The theme is specifying love and the relationships, rather than loneliness. This makes is a little bit off topic of loneliness, and going into love and its hardship, which makes it less effective than the Backstreet Boys. As a result, the Backstreet Boys made its theme more understandable than 'N Sync.

s the Backstreet Boys makes it easier for listeners to understand their song and its ways to solve problems, as well as the message they are trying to give out.

In conclusion, one can easily see that Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely by the Backstreet Boys is better than I Want You Back by NSYNC. The Backstreet Boys' skill in writing songs surpasses the song written by 'N Sync. From 1 to 10, Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely will be rated 10 because of it's a good use of poetic devices, the theme, and its images. The use of hyperbole, symbol, and conceit makes the listeners go deeply into the song. It makes the listeners think of what the song is trying to express. They also compare loneliness to complicated and strange ways by its use of irony and paradox, which makes listeners wonder what loneliness actually means. Its theme and title explains completely about being lonely, while its images explain the unexplainable but imaginable situations. Also the music video completely matches the song. Only people with heart and
