George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, India. His father Richard was an agent in the Opium Department of the Indian Civil Service. His mother Ida was 18 years younger than her husband and Orwell also had a sister named Marjorie. Orwell described them as "lower upper middle class." His family owned no property and had no extensive investments. Like many middle-class English families of the time, they were completely dependent on the British Empire for their income and future. George Orwell's time period influenced his writings greatly. This is obviously due to the fact that he wrote about the events or things that were occurring before him. He wrote about the war that he fought in Spain, the time he spent among the poor, and also about when he was ill with tuberculosis. He wrote the book 1984 while he was ill; the book reflects the harshness of human suffering, the shame of pain. His novels were basically based on what he had encountered during his time and it is his encounters and creativity that made him what he is known as today.

Orwell also taught himself how to write at the age of 24. In the spring of 1928, he went on living with the poor, first in London, then in Paris, for over a year. In Paris he lived and worked in a working-class quarter; he worked as a dishwasher. When he came back to London, he lived for a couple of months among the tramps and poor people in London. In 1936, Orwell opened a village shop in Wallington, Hertfordshire where he did business in the mornings, and wrote in the afternoons. Also, in the same year he married Eileen O 'Shaughnessy.

In 1938, Orwell became ill with tuberculosis and spent the winter in Morocco. In 1941, he joined the British Broadcasting Corporation as a producer in the Indian section of the eastern service.
