A detailed Summary of Macbeths developement is chapter one

The Development of MacBeth's Character Through Act 1

Initially we see Macbeth as a valiant, heroic, powerful solider, his conduct on the battlefield described vividly by a wounded captain returning from the battle."For brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name." Macbeths actions on the battlefield show us another side to his character, we see a ruthless, cold-blooded man that shows no morality towards the victims of his sword. His sword is described as, "brandished steel which smoked with bloody execution," this imagery tool gives us the romantic impression of Macbeth slaying so many soldiers that his sword was hot with the work he had done. Barbarity is also portrayed in the description given by the captain, as he tells of the precise undertakings of Macbeths killings, "He unseamed him from the nave to th'chaps and fixed his head upon the battlements." Duncan then describes Macbeth as," valiant cousin, worthy gentleman." This description promoted a apprehensive image in my eyes as, before, Macbeth had been epitomized a barbaric soldier showing no mercy, but now he is being praised by the King of Scotland for his actions. Macbeths barbarism is yet again portrayed when we are told of how he treats his victims, "fixed his head u

Macbeths encounter with the three witches is the source of his murderous intent, he starts to become more unrelenting and egotistical, this is his secondary nature becoming stronger. When Macbeth first meets the three witches he is frightened by them due to there knowledge of Macbeths life. On meeting Macbeth they state his name and hail him,"Thane of Glamis." The predictions foretold by the witches arouses Macbeths fear,"Why do you ... fear things that ... sound so fair." The witches predict that he will become thane of Cawdor and later become king. Macbeth is wary of this information as the present king has not proclaimed him as his successor. Therefore in order for Macbeth to claim the throne he must murder Duncan, the present king. Macbeth is clearly being portrayed as an ambitious character capable of contemplating murder. This is clear as, after he's been told hi is the thane of Cawdor, he is contemplating being king and says, "Whose murder yet is but fantastical." Therefore the three witches predictions scare Macbeth because he doesn't know whether he will react to them rationally. Macbeths ambition is yet again another factor as it lead to his eagerness to hear more from the witches as they depart, and he demands to hear more, "Stay you imperfect speakers ... speak, I charge
