Mary Jo Leddy's and Mustapha Monds views on consumerism and

The novel Brave New World is a utopia based novel that deals largely with consumerism and the greed of the people. Consumerism, being the theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial. That is the topic that has arisen. However, different views on consumerism were presented through the powerful leader, Mustapha Mond, and the article "And the angel said, 'Be happy' " written by Mary Joe Leddy. The pieces of writing show contrasting views of one another. Mond thinks that consumerism is good for society and that it keeps the people under control and mindless, where as Leddy believes that society will run our world for a long time. Both writings expose arguments about the need to have more (crave), and its connections with happiness.

In today's society it seems as though the need and greed to have everything is inevitable. In the brave new world society, the people have everything they want, but their need grows rapidly. Mond sees this control as essential for the societies success and survival. Leddy says "you must have more to be more. And more. You must have more to be happy."
