Buddhism

There are many different religions in the world. Each religion offers its own qualities of living to make life as enjoyable and fulfilled as possible. Each religion has different rules and values that a person must follow along with meditation or prayer. Each religion has different goals that one must reach in order to fully understand what the religion truly means. The goal of the Buddhist is to achieve a total state of nirvana. Literally it means, "blowing out". In nirvana, all "individual personality or ego ceases to exist and there is nothing to be reborn." (The Buddhist Tradition, 12) It may be the felling of nirvana that is attracting more and more people to this religion. Buddhism may not be known all over the world but it has spread greatly and now is the forth largest religion in the world with an estimated number of 350 million followers. Throughout this paper you will learn about the history of Buddhism, some of the meditation styles, and how it compares to the leading religion Christianity.

Next the Buddha stated the four noble truths

1.) Nothing is lost in the universe

The Noble Eightfold Path was the next step to be taught. If these are followed it will lead to the end of suffering.

4. Path to end Suffering, everyone can be enlightened.

Siddhartha had started the religion called Buddhism by finding the middle path and creating teachings for others to follow now it was up to the followers to help spread the religion throughout the world. Buddhism received great support from the rulers and became a dominant religion almost all over India. Although resulting from its size and volume, differences began to grow between different schools of Buddhism. From the second century forward, Mahayana became a dominant religion in India. By the 13th century Buddhism was completely wiped out from India but it had established itself as a dominant religion in the rest of Asia, specifically in China. In 854, there was a major discrimination of Buddhists that resulted in the destruction of Monasteries. From then on Buddhism never recovered itself in China. Buddhism came to Korea from China in the Fourth century and grew after the 4th century. During the Yi dynasty (1392 - 1910's) Buddhism was forced into the background and Confucianism was made the state religion but then revived itself in 1945. Buddhism in Japan came from Korea in the early 6th century and received royal support from Prince Shotolm who established Buddhism as a state religion. Buddhism came to Cambodia in the 3rd century BC. After experiencing growth and destruction it withheld it's ground and continued to spread to other countries such as; Thiland, Cambodia, Myanmar, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Tibet.
