The short story "The Valentine Generation from the collection "The Valentine Generation and other stories" is written by John Wain and was first published in 1980. This is a realistic short-story from "every day life". It is a story that deals with the great mystery of love. There are two main characters; The old routined postman , who is the narrator of this story, and the young, pretty, well-dressed and educated, impulsive girl who wants him to help her.
The story is set in contemporary London, present time. To make it as realistic as possible, the author gives us an exact description of where and when in London the plot takes place. The whole action begins with the postman who is having a completely normal day at work, following his ordinar

y procedure. Just as he is emptying one of the post-boxes, a very unhappy, young girl comes towards him and begs him to get a letter back. This letter to her boyfriend is filled with accusations and lies as a revenge according to the fact that she caught him cheating on her. In spite of this she now regrets that it was ever written and desperately wants it back, if not she says ,she will be unhappy for the rest of her life. The postman does not want to break any of his firm postman-rules, and is not interesting in getting late because of a silly youngster who is trying to tell him what to do.
