After viewing the film Exodus in class and reading the book as well, it can be noticed that though there were several similarities in the two, the number of differences, large and small, was far greater. Whether it be something as large as a missing character, or something as small as chronological difference, discrepancies were very obvious between the two works. The story line and plot of section I followed very closely to that of the movie, but there were subtle twists in it which made it very interesting. Between the two, there are rebellious characters that have many of the same personality traits and perform actions that depict rebellion in both works. Such characters include Ben Ari Canaan, Dov, Mark Parker, and Kitty Freemont. The differences arise in the movie in some of these characters and there actions.

Section one is an action packed part of the book, as it is in the movie, and it generally sets the tone for the rest of the story. Ben Ari Canaan played a very similar role in the rebellion of helping the Jews that were placed in the retention camp from The Star of David escape. Just as in the book, David Ben Ami and Mandria meet with Ben Ari Canaan and compose a plan

to help liberate the Jews from Cyprus, and to then send them to the promise lands of Palestine. Though there is a difference in chronological timing in which they met to make the plan, for the most part, the escape is carried out the same way as it is in the book. Ben Ari dresses himself as a British colonel with forged papers stating General Southerland's request to send the Jews that were on the Star of David back to Germany. This is where the movie again has differences from the novel. In the novel, there was much convincing needed to persuade Dov to help them and forge the request papers. This convincing was not present in the movie. Also, in the novel, the plan was to have 302 hundred Jews escape, where as in the movie, they have all 611 that where on The Star of David escape to Palestine. Once the forged request was carried out, Ben Ari played the same role in rebellion as he did in the novel, leading the Jews that where on Exodus towards a group rebellion of a hunger strike. The strike sparks worldwide attention against the Brittish treatment of the Jews, and eventually results in permission to sail to Palestine.
