In this book a professor and his apprentice get the chance to look for a sea monster. When they get on the ship they meet the master harpooner. They see the sea monster and try to kill it. The monster hits the boat. The impact knocks the master harpooner and the professor. Right away the professor's apprentice leaps off the ship to get his master. The ship leaves them in the ocean. Floating in the ocean the professor and his apprentice come to a submarine. This submerging sea craft is the monster that the ship saw. The master harpooner also floats to the submarine. The ship's crew comes back from underwater. They had to bury a man who had died. At first Captain Nemo, the ship's captain, tests the professor's character by giving the professor a chance to live or to die. No matter what the professor chose to do the other two men would be left in the sea to die. The professor turned down Captain Nemo's offer. This told Nemo that the professor would rather die than leave his friend's. After that Nemo welcomed them to the Nautilus. Everything on the ship came from the ocean. The ship's crew was going to go on an underwater hunting and farming mission. Nemo
ordered the master harpooner and the professor's apprentice to go along with the crew. Then Nemo took the professor on an under water tour. Later Nemo took the professor to an island not far away. Then these men went to an island not far away called Volcania. There they built the Nautilis. They used the Nautilus to destroy the ship that the slaves had loaded. Nemo also told the professor that his wife and young son were tortured and killed. The master harpooner and the professor's apprentice looked at Nemo's charts because they didn't like what he was doing. They then put notes in bottles and threw them in the ocean hoping someone would find the notes and stop what Nemo was doing. The Nautilus got stuck ashore of New Guinea. The master harpooner and the professor's apprentice asked to go ashore to collect specimens. The captain allowed them to go but told them to stay on the beach.
