North China Plain

China has an interesting surface that slopes down from west to east in a four-step 'staircase'. The North China Plain is included in the third step that begins at the line from the Greater Hinggan, Taihang, Wushan and Xuefeng mountain ranges eastward to the seacoast, with an elevation ranging from 500-1,000 meters. Running from north to south are the Northeast Plain, the North China Plain, and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain (China).

The North China Plain is greatly affected by the monsoon wind patterns that distinguish much of the Asian region. Defined as having hot, humid, rain filled summers with cold and dry winters, this climate is considered humid continental. Winter monsoon blows out from interior Asia leaving the area with long, dark, cold winter days. Annual precipitation rates vary dramatically year-to-year, often leaving droughts or floods. Vegetation in this region is broad leaf and mixed broad leaf coniferous. The deep, brown topsoil is planted with wheat, corn, millet, sorghum, and cotton (Slater 350).

Floods in North China almost all relate to the mismanagement of the Huang He (Yellow River). The Huang flows down from the Tibetan Plateau and courses for more than 1,000 miles through the loess soils o

The river carries this loess soil as silt to the Yellow Sea. This process has created the large, lush, and relatively level North China Plain (Slater 350).

To fix the problems, China is concentrating on the Yangtze River of Central China. The longest river in Asia, it has a vast drainage basin of more than 1.8 million sq km (700,000 sq mi), about 20 percent of China's total area. The Yangtze rises near the source of the Huang He and enters the sea at Shanghai. It is a major transportation artery. The river's Three Gorges Dam, under construction in Hubei Province, will be the world's largest dam when completed. As planned, this controversial project will create a
