Gangs: A Young Person's Adoption to family The problem of gang activity is not a new one facing our country's youth today. Ever since the beginning of human existence, gangs have served as a means of protection for humans throughout society. However, gang activity has recently come to the forefront of many dilemmas facing our nation today. For instance, many crimes and drug activities in many communities are heavily associated with gangs. While cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles have always been known for their chronic amount of gang activity, gangs have spread rapidly throughout this country. Consequently, this has lead to an enormous amount of teenage youth getting involved in gangs for reasons that vary. One of the most notable reasons why kids get involve in gangs is that gangs offer kids a sense of belonging which many of them lack at home. Another reason why gangs serve as family to some kids is because they provide them with economic stability. For example, many gangs make money by selling drugs or robbing others in the community, which definitely pay more that after school jobs or weekly allowances if some kids get that. Often, some kids look at gangs and see money, which leads many of them into joining and giving up in school. This is especially common for an average student. Perhaps many kids feel obligated to help younger siblings or struggling parents to survive, not taking into consideration the long-term effects. Finally, one of the last reasons why gangs serve as a family to kids is safety. Gangs provide safety in numbers, meaning that many kids are living in war zones in which they could not survive alone. For instance, I suggested that cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles are already noted for high crime activity, in which an alone child could be swallowed.
