Robinson Crusoe, the protagonist of Defoe's novel, experiences journeys and adventures which transform him from an unsure, immature, and disobedient son to a religious, experienced man with a strong faith in God and strong set of morals and values. During the start of the story, Robinson Crusoe's father hopes that his only living son will become a lawyer and advises him not to set out on sea life. He disobeys his father and ultimately gets stranded on an island in which he learns valuable life lessons and transforms into a whole new person.

Robinson Crusoe was a very uncertain boy who could never make up his mind and keep his decisions. For example, at the beginning of the novel, Crusoe's father warns and tells him to stay away from the adventures of the ocean. He initially agrees to his father's wishes and plans on not taking to sea. But, after a few days, he changes his mind and takes back what he said.
