Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalysis is a very complex and interesting topic of debate. The foundering father of psychoanalysis is Sigmund Freud (1836-1939). Freud began studying medicine at the University of Vienna in 1873; Freud was very interested in the mind, especially in the forms of mental illnesses such as neurosis and hysteria. As a philosopher Freud was interested in finding a connection between the mind and basic structures of society. Freud had many ideas and they were broken down into different sections from the Oedipus complex to the interpretation of dreams. Freud had a theory on the human psyche. Freud had initial ideas that the levels of consciousness in the mind were divided in to two parts, the conscious and the unconscious. The unconscious, which is part of our mind that we don't use knowingly, yet has a strong impact on our actions. An example would be when a barman might serve a young, blonde haired, blue-eyed woman before a man. He might have not consciously realised he was doing this. Yet subconsciously, it may be that he fancies her and prioritises her over the man. He may see it consciously as serving the first person there when in actual fact, unconsciously his attracted to her.
of this, which allows Ripley to understand that he has known from the beginning about the alien. He tries to kill Ripley, as he knows she will go and tell Lambert and Parker and jeopardize the situation. He is fulfilling his role as the superego using his primary instincts. Parker manages to save Ripley and as he hits Ash, Ash goes funny and we find out he is an android. I see this as a metaphor for the fact that a superego is based on norms and values society has set. And the fact that Ash happens to be a robot sums up the fact we all listen to and follow what society wants regardless of whether it is right or wrong. Society would love for us all to be robotic, like Ash and not question authority. The Id to me is clearly represented in the shape of the alien. We see the alien develop firstly in its pod to then intelligently using Kane's body as a host allowing the alien to become part human. On the vessel Kane 'gives birth' to the alien. The alien possesses instinctive, primary desires and urges. It wants to survive and the only way it knows how is by killing the crew. It will protect itself by any means in order to survive, it also takes on traits of a human and realises when it's in danger and cleverly averts being captured or killed. That is until the final moment when Ripley's manages to out smart it. An example of this is when Lambert and Parker are trying to escape from the alien by loading the escape vessel but while they are preparing the alien sneaks up and kills the two of them. It knows by them escaping it will have no one to kill causing unsatisfaction for it, by not being able to fulfil its primal urges. Ridley Scott's 1979 film 'Alien' clearly portrays people or objects as a model for Freud's ideas. A basic overview of the plot is that a team are on space on course for earth. They are woken up early as their ship has picked up what it believes to be a distress signal from a downed space vessel on an uncharted planet and the computer has responded by alerting the crew. The crew at first do not realise that their ship has diverted course and they believe they have been woken as they are near home. They soon realise that the ship has diverted them to check out the unknown vessel. The abandoned vessel has an alien on it, which then proceeds to impregnate Cain. Cain is allowed on the ship when Ash violates quarantine rules and overrides Ripley's position of authority. The alien then proceeds to killing all of the crew before Ripley kills it leaving her as the sole s
