Anne Frank: A Legacy

Anne Frank: The Diary of A Young Girl

" ... I love them, but only because they are Mummy and Margot...my insides gnaw at me when he praises her...he doesn't notice how he treats Margot different from me...Margot is the sweetest, prettiest girl in the world...and no one is ever satisfied with me..."

"We're much too young to deal with these problems, but they keep thrusting themselves on us until, finally, we're forced to think up a solution, though most of the time our solutions crumble when faced with the facts. It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart."

"...And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals. Perhaps the day will come when I'll be able to realize them..."

"I hope I shall be able to confide in you completely, as I have never been able to do in anyone before and I hope you will be a great support and comfort to me...Kitty, Pim will never realize I've changed. With Mummy and Margot it's different. I love them, but not like the way I love Pim. And Kitty, my minds races with jealousy when ever he compliments her, Kitty, and that is ever so often, as dear Margot is ever so perfect, graceful, beautiful and smart...Kitty, I'm so utterly alone in this glum...so utterly alone."

I think the true setting of Anne Frank's diary would be the city of Amsterdam. Not because Anne and her family are hiding within the city, but because of what's happening in the city. The Nazi occupation...fluttering Jews...inhuman cruelty. The Amsterdam that has subjected Anne and her family to all this would be more appropriately titled the setting. What went on in those many months affected only the mental stability of the inhabitants...what was going on within a torn Amsterdam was what physically affected Anne's life...and her existence.

can't say I relate very well to Anne's feelings in the passage. I'm the oldest in my family, and I could probably relate better to Margot in this case. However, from a distance, I can see what Anne is trying to say. This paragraph could very much, with moderate alterations, be the life story of Ron Weasley, one of JK Rowling's most popular characters. Anne feels that Margot's achievements overshadow what she has become. These feelings could be present with anyone, and not just the younger siblings. No one likes to play second fiddle to anyone, and especially with your parents...you're supposed to be the apple of their eye, no matter what, or at least that's my conception.

This may not seem like the perfect fusion of quotes for something describing Anne Frank's mood in her diary, but you will be able to see that these quotes give you a pretty good description of her overall mood. They contain no descriptive language or vocabulary because this diary wasn't a work of fiction by an adult author. It was written by a fourteen-year-old as intelligent as anyone her age, and it conveys a message. This could perfectly describe Anne's mood in a selective few moments, but I think looking at the whole picture, this describes what Anne wanted to be...not what she was. Everyone wants to be happy, and while her mood changed as a human's, her overall wish wasn't eternal happiness, just small joy amid her life.
