The Scarlet Letter, a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and The Crucible, a playwright written by Arthur miller are good examples that in literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers. Characters from both stories are assumed by their peers to be sinners and therefore people look at them as if they are worth nothing at all. In instances like these the true evil is how people can hurt one another because they believe one went against the church. The evil that lives in the hatred for the sinners will at first be strong in the hearts of the public, but in time the people will learn to love and accept the sinners as equals.
