Casper David Friedrich's "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog"Jonathan Ferguson's "What Type of Forest do You Prefer?" Casper David Friedrich was born on September 5, 1774 in Greifswald, Germany. He resided in his hometown until 1798 when he attended Copenhagen Academy for the Arts. When he had completed his scholastic career, he settled in Dresden. As a child he endured many hardships which would influence his art, and ultimately his later life. As a young boy he faced very difficult and trying issues. His mother died at a young age, and Friedrich was deeply affected and scarred. Friedrich has involuntarily picked up a greater appreciation of death, and a great respect for God. This appreciation became more and more apparent in his art. Friedrich sees death as rebirth, a cycle of renewal, and in nature this is in harmony. His respect for God translates into a respect for the World in which we all live. He believes that by respecting what God has created we are in turn respecting God himself. Conversely, by disrespecting nature we are also disrespecting God the creator. Friedrich lived in Dresden after he graduated from Copenhagen Academy, and it
