Comparison

Now dead over one hundred and fifty years, Edgar Allan Poe has left us some of the most chilling horror stories ever written. He did, in fact, provide us with some of the first horror stories the literary world had ever known. Poe worked with the natural world, animals and even with the weather in creating the spine-jarring tales. His most popular stories include "The Cask of Amontillado", "The Tell Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat". Poe was preoccupied with death, disfigurement, and the darker aspects of the universe. He was an expert at blending together characters, setting, and theme, in such a way that the reader gets enthralled. Each of these three short stories have the same three major aspects in common.

Revenge and intelligence becomes a deadly combination when they are combined together in a situation. Revenge occurs when one party will do anything; in a sense reimburse another party for the pain they bestowed upon them. With intelligence, sometimes too much of it can lead to improper use of it. When these two phenomenons go hand in hand, only trouble lies ahead for the one who revenge is about to take place on. Basically, a witty plan is usually devised so that they can punish with impunity. In "The Cask of Amont

Perhaps the theme is the least important aspect in the "The Cask of Amontillado". After all, it is about a crime, and what sense can be made of such horror? Perhaps the idea behind the story is that no one can find refuge from a deranged mind, or that terrible crimes can be committed when an imaginary offence can worsen into a deep hatred. Perhaps Poe is saying that there have always been great crimes that go unsolved.

The characters in "The Tell Tale Heart" play a large role in the story because they set the theme as strange and bizarre. Firstly, the killer attacks his master in the dead of night, cuts his body up and buries it beneath the floor. The killing was conducted in a wired manner and the behaviour of the killer is very disturbed. Secondly, the old man can feel that the killer is there but his terror is too great for him to run, which is rather frightening. Thirdly, the character development that doesn't unfold in the story, like the horrible acts of cruelty that the master had to have inflicted on his servant for the servant to act out in such a manner, is just as creepy because it let's the reader imagine what might have happened. All in all, the characters of the story provide an unsettling theme.

The setting of "The Black Cat" plays an important role in the story. The narrator's house was of an old and Gothic style. The setting where the story takes also contributes in the disturbing feeling the reader gets. The setting not only in "The Black Cat" but also in "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Tell Tale Heart" helps create the intended mood, works as an important tool for the writer to explain the circumstances of the story and helps the reader to understand the background, the time period and the culture about which the story is written. Without a clear explanation of the setting the theme of the story could be misunderstood. Setting provides enough information to enable the reader to visualize and realize the true depth of a story.

In these three stories we just get a
