Rubberized Asphalt
In this report, I will be talking about rubberized asphalt. I will talk about how this product first came about, and how it is made. Also I will talk about what the advantages of using this are and other information about it. In the world, there are many roads leading in every direction. Over time people began to develop ways so that it would be easier to travel. Starting from dirt roads, and using the river system and railroad, we have come a long way. Cars were not even thought of as a major way of transportation until today. With the growth of car companies there would be many tires that would come and go. Roads would be created spanning the length of the country. This would eventually lead to many tires being used and dumped into the junkyards and landfills, as well as roads crumbling over time to the great forces or nature with few people wondering how they could make a better road that could last longer then before. After a great span of time someone finally found out how to put it all together. They found out how to put use of the old tires in the junkyard along with a way to stop the roads from being weak and allowing them to have a greater life span with less cracks.
There are disadvantages to this material also. After this material is put down, cars cannot drive on it for an hour or longer. The rubberized asphalt must be able to cool down to 150 degrees. Since the rubberized asphalt is very hard to compact less than 290 degrees, it may take some time for the product to cool down. In traffic filled areas it could cause traffic for a short term. Also the rubber tires on the cars cannot go on to the rubber asphalt. This is because if they go on to the asphalt while it is still cooling it will move it around since the rubber is still very hot and will make it shift. Another problem that comes with rubber asphalt is that the temperature must be just right when you are placing it. You must have a contractor who knows what kind of material he is dealing with or else they may put it on incorrectly. Since rubber tires are not permitted on the rubberized asphalt when it is being placed, a roller with self-propelled, steel wheel rollers is needed. The paver that is needed to put it down must also be self-propelled. For the small jobs that are being done with rubberized asphalt, conventional asphalt cannot be made at the same time. The plant that is making the rubberized asphalt must finish making all of the order and then it will be able to make the conventional again. This slows down the work for other companies that need work done with there asphalt jobs, but cannot get it at that certain plant that is making it. A big problem that occurred when placing down the rubberized asphalt occurred when many workers were becoming sick from inhaling a combination of the amount of asphalt fumes or smoke generated by the paving operation and personal sensitivities to that certain smoke. Rubberized asphalt is asphalt that is combined with rubber from waste tires. There are three different ways that the rubber from the tires can be added. The three different ways are the wet process, the dry process, and the terminal blend process. The differences between the three processes are that in the wet process, the rubber is added to the asphalt before adding to the resulting binder to the aggregates. In the dry process, the rubber is added with the aggregates before the asphalt. In the wet process, special equipment is needed to mix the rubber and the asphalt together before adding the aggregates. In the dry process, the rubber, asphalt, and the aggregates are mixed together without the special equipment needed from the wet process. In the terminal blend process, the asphalt is blended with the rubber at the refinery. This process does not use as much crumb rubber as the other two and uses about half of what the other processes use when making rubberized asphalt. The wet process has so far proved to be the most cost effective way of creating the product. At the plant they should have the proper equipment to create asphalt. Before the rubber asphalt can be placed for resurfacing, the current asphalt must be cleaned and the cracks in the ground that are over ¼ of an inch must be filled. Also any badly deteriorated parts of the road must be removed and replaced.
