Character Analysis on the book Not Wanted on the Voyage

Not Wanted On The Voyage is driven by one major plot motive, conflict amongst each other. The conflict creates apprehension and drives the book onward. The events of the book greatly add to the conflicts and further add to the tension in the story. Since conflict drives this story the conflict must have a means of exposing itself. There are several ways that the conflict is exposed through this story. The conflict is driven through the events that occur in the as the book moves on as well as events that occurred in the past in the story. It is also Enflamed by the character interaction amongst one another. In fact the plot is mainly driven by the conflict between the characters. These conflicts are caused with a specific reason though, the reason is because of the characters for the most part are family. The fact that they are family is exactly why the conflict is caused, since they all love each other and live together it makes the conflict grow painful when they differ in opinions as much as they do over the construction of the arc and the following of Yaweh's will. Therefore it is obvious that conflict is made drastically worse by the fact that the characters are family.

The primary character of this book is Mrs. Noyes. Her

Standing on the outer rim of the families quarrels is Ham. His personality makes him out to be a loner and he tries not to get himself involved in the conflicts throughout the family. He becomes greatly conflicted however when he meets the mysterious woman Lucy (quite literally the devil in disguise!) and he is torn between supporting his mother in boycotting the arc boarding, or to go onto the arc with his bride Lucy. He remains faithful to his mother but still boards the arc due to his new found love. When Mrs. Noyes finally does get on the arc she is locked away underneath and supported by Ham and his wife Lucy and all three of them are locked away in the lower compartments of the arc. This conflict between his personal intrest and his love and respect for his mother creates a crucial alliance in the book and is integral to the structure of the plot. This staple in the plot is well supported due to the familial bond that he has with his mother.

beliefs and morals are tested throughout the novel from start to finish. In the beginning her conflicting opinions were miniscule and irrelevant to the plot overall. In time however these small conflicts grew and larger conflicts arose from the lurking emotions that she kept deep inside and was forced to keep bottled up due to Noah's tyrannical marital views. The conflicting opinions show themselves early on in the book such as page 13 when she replies to Noah in an argument "The only principles that matter here are yours!". This situation foreshadows the conflict to come even though the argument was merely over which son was doing the ritual sacrafice. As the book progresses Mrs. Noyes feels alienated by the way her husband Noah is treating her and the lack of support she is receiving from her family. She becomes distant from everyone else and eventually leaves just as the arc is completed and the rainfall has begun. Her inner turmoil is unleashed when she finds Emma's older sister who is mentally disabled alone and abandoned during the middle of the end of the wor
