A Seventeenth Century Soap Opera

Love, sin, guilt, an illegitimate child, adultery, and a sick twisted husband seeking his own kind of twisted revenge on who he suspects the baby's father is, it sounds like a scene off the soap operas, but this soap opera is set in Puritan New England. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel that deals with people and how they respond to adversity in a Puritan village in New England.

In the novel one of the women of the village named Hester Prynne becomes pregnant after she commits adultery with one of the men in the village but the child's father's identity is a mystery to every person in the town except for Hester and the man. As punishment for her sins Hester is ordered to wear a single letter, in scarlet, on the front of her dress. The letter A is her punishment because she is an adulteress and that single letter will remind her of her sins forever. While receiving her punishment from the town's elders she is told that the only way to relieve some of her grief is to give up the name of the child's father, to which she responds: "My child must seek a heavenly father; she shall never know her earthly one!" Hester is stubborn and she sinned, and she has carried not only the sign of her sin, but also the gui

Guilt, guilt of not revealing your sins, guilt of knowing that if you ever do reveal these sins you will be banished forever, Arthur Dimmesdale has to live with all of this guilt and more, because he commits adultery with Hester Prynne. He tries to make up for all of his sins and then he even tries to tell his parishioners that even he has a black heart, but they think that he is perfect and that since he has sinned terribly then they must be purely evil. He commits adultery with Hester Prynne and worse than that he hides the sins deep inside his heart for eight years. Eight years is such a long time for a man to deal with the weight of sin on his heart. Perhaps this is the reason for Dimmesdale's failing health or maybe he is being poisoned by Chillingworth because Chillingworth suspects that he is the father of Pearl. "The Judgment of God is upon me, it is too great for me to struggle with." Dimmesdale believes that God is the reason for his failing health, and no matter how hard he tries he can never escape it. His body is racked with sickness until the day that he dies, maybe if he just confessed his sins then he would be cured, but whether he would have been cured or not is a mystery that we will never solve.
