New York State
New York State was named after the English Duke of York who later became King James II of England, The nickname "Empire State" came from George Washington, who boldly claimed New York would become the seat of a new empire. New York is located in the northeastern part of the United States. New York's northern border is Canada and The Saint Lawrence River. New York's eastern borders are Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts. New Jersey and Pennsylvania make up New York's southern border. New York's western border is not land but bodies of water and they are Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. New York's land regions are the Appalachians and the Central Plains. The motto of New York is "Excelsior", which means "ever upward." In 1784 George Washington called New York the "Seat of the Empire." New Yorkers work hard to live up to their motto and made New York State the national leader that it is. The first symbol I have listed for New York is the state bird, which is the bluebird. Other leading Christian churches include Episcopalian, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Greek Orthodox. The most important Catholic church in New York, and the largest in the United States, is St. Patrick's Cathedral, located in New York City. Some places of interest that I have included in my report are, the Statue of Liberty National Monument. It is located on Liberty Island in New York City. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France, it was unveiled in 1886 and stands as a symbol of freedom and American ideals. From 1892 all immigrants who arrived in New York had to unload at Ellis Island, where they were registered and examined by doctors. By 1954, more than twelve million people had passed through the island. Located on the west bank of the Hudson River is Bear Mountain State Park. The mountain is the center of a resort area with facilities for both winter and summer sports. On the surrounding park grounds, which are crossed by the Appalachian Trail, are a hotel, amusement areas, and a wharf for Hudson River sightseeing boats. Another summer and winter resort area is Lake Placid, it is located in the Adirondacks, and is a Winter Olympic site. General Grant National Memorial in New York City is a monument that marks the burial place of Ulysses S. Grant, the eighteenth president of the United States and victorious Civil War general. Another interesting place to visit is the Baseball Hall of Fame, located in Cooperstown. The greatest baseball players of all time are enshrined in this combined Hall of Fame and baseball museum. One of the most famous buildings, and at one time, the world's tallest building is the Empire State Building, located in New York City. It has been a world's landmark since it was completed in 1931. Services in New York include transportation, salespeople, sports players, firefighters, nurses, teachers, and doctors. The fertile flatlands of Long Island produce many agriculture crops for the state's large cities. Leading farm products are cattle, eggs, corn, oats, potatoes, and chickens. Favorable climate and soil make it possible for the state to produce large crops of apples, grapes, pears, and peaches. New York
