Their way of life sometimes did not agree with the other colonies so they did things differently. They relied mostly on slave labor while the other colonies did not. For example, the economy of the south took a hit when the talk of the abolishment of slavery came down the pike. Knowing that this was the base of their entire lifestyle they protested. In the end they were forced to change, as is the case in that type of scenario.
