Symbolism is used throughout the epic of Beowulf. The unknown author used symbolism in the battles to represent Beowulf different stages in life. This is a story that is more than Man vs. Monster. This story shows the difference between the stages of our lives. When we are young we are reckless. bold, proud, and seek outside gratification. As we grow older we mature and begin to more careful. This is shown when Beowulf takes a weapon with him to fight Grendel's mother and his warriors to fight the dragon. Finally when we are older and at our wisest we fight because we have to. We will fight and be realistic and try to protect those we love. The battle with Grendel's mother represents the adult stage of Beowulf's life.
