Scarlet Letter Critical Review Paper The Scarlet letter is a very important and impacting story to the time back then on the East Coast, to now in 2002. It is a love story that is broken up in several different ways. Sometimes you may think it's just a story about how leaders in that time handled things. This could be true. You may also think it's a story of the Devil and revenge on one another. That could be true. Or, you may think it's a story of a woman coping with the trademark of an adulterer. All of these things should be taken into consideration when dealing with the thought of the Scarlet Letter story. It is not only a love story, but also a story of leadership, revenge, and all ends with misfortune. First of all, the Scarlet Letter could be defined as a story of love. This story could truly be a love story. The main plot to the story is love. The reason that Hester wore the scarlet letter is because she was in love with a man. In most old love stories, it usually happens at the end that a big misfortune happens and the two lovers are separated either by death or the world's rules. In the third chapter, Chillingworth, Hester's former husband, had told Hester that he would take his revenge on whoever was Hester's adulterer. Chillingworth made Hester promise not to give away his identity so that he may stay anonymous and remain among the crowds unnoticed. Finally Chillingworth becomes Dimmsdale's physician. Dimmsdale was the minister of the church at that time. What we don't know at this time is that Dimmsdale was the one that Hester had adultery with. Chillingworth finds this out and wants to kill Dimmsdale. Chillingworth is almost the ultimate definition of revenge. He tries to make his revenge several other times after. When Hester and Dimmsdale want to escape, Dimmsdale finds his way on to the same boat in which Hester and Dimmsdale plan to leave on. He also tries to keep Dimmsdale from letting Hester and Pearl on the scaffold with him. Chillingworth made a huge impact on the story as far as revenge. her daughter.
