Act 01 Othello

Matters between Brabantio and Othello have come to a head in this scene. The conflict between the two regarding the marriage of Desdemona is being settled with what one could call a sort of informal trial, with Desdemona called to speak before the Duke, whom Brabantio has consulted.

This conflict takes place parallel to a wider one: between the Venetian State and the Ottomans over the much spoken about Cyprus.

So, the smaller and more personal conflict between Othello and Brabantio is mirrored and offset by the grander battle between the Ottomans and the Venetians.

Desdemona's speech is riddled with abstract nouns such as "love" and "quality" in reference to Othello. She speaks of "his honours" and "his valiant parts". In this context, he

When speaking of the matter of his marriage, Othello refers to his past experiences (as he does heavily elsewhere). He speaks of "the flinty and steel couch of war".
