A detailed Summary of The Stranger


Meursault ,the main character in Albert Camus' The Stranger, is both a round character and a static character. Although he does not seem to be well developed, the reader does learn a lot about this character. He is dull and does not show any emotion to situations that would oppress, please, or scare other people. He does, however, say what is in his mind. He will answer questions that are asked with the most sincerity even if it gets him into trouble. This attitude is seen throughout most, if not the whole story.

Meursault's apathetic manner makes the reader feel a sense of shock, and it is disturbing to see the way he reacts to the events that happen around him. When he first receives the telegram informing him about his mother's death, he seems not affected and nonchalant. Meursault says, " After the funeral the case will have a more official feel to it." (p.


The love for his mother is later put into question when asked whether
