A detailed Summary of Intellects in Great Expectations

In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, certain characters show that when they

care for someone, and when they are simple and appreciative of everything they have,

volumes of knowledge are gained. One can observe that Joe and biddy are simple.

Because they live such unintricate lives, they can cherish everything that Pip brings to

them, being joys or sadness. However, because of the experience they have acquired over

the years, they have been molded into intelligent and wise beings. Regardless if the type of

education is formal or rational, Biddy and Joe Gargery are brilliant people.

Both the likes of Biddy and Joe are similar in ways of their lifestyles and attitudes.

The blacksmith and the teacher have very simple desires and necessities. He is not in need

of an extravagant lifestyle, expensive clothing or a large house. He is content with what he

has and who he is. This idea is best exemplified when Joe Gargery describes what basic

items make him content, "...Give me...a good book or a newspaper and sit me afore a

good fire and I ask no more..." (Dickens, 41). By Joe telling Pip he does not need more

than literature and the warmth of a fire to be happy, a great demonstra

beings. They are incredibly knowledgeable regardless of formal or rational intellect. Many

assist Pip. Joe talks to Pip with regards to experiences he has learned from in the past .
