The Doors
During the late 1960's bands sang of love and peace while drugs were passed out at every moment. But for The Doors it was different, because they could get a person high by just listening to songs of mystery and intenseness. The nights belonged to the gods of revelry and rebirth, and the songs invoked their potent passions, the Oedipal nightmare of "The End," the breathless gallop of "Not to Touch the Earth," the doom of "Hyacinth House," the ecstasy of "Light My Fire," the dark uneasy undertones of "Can't See Your Face in My Mind," and the alluring loss of consciousness in "Crystal Ship." And like rituals, The Doors willingly offered themselves as a sacrifice to be torn apart, to bleed, to die, to be reborn for people to listen to their music.During the summer of 1965 in Venice Beach, California, Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met for the first time. Manzarek asked Morrison to sing a few lines of poetry he had written. Morrison was obligated but eventually sang a few lines from the song "Moonlight Drive". They both agreed to create a band unknowingly that they would influence many. Ray Manzarek explained the idea of a band John Densmore and Robby Krieger in meditation class. A quote from the famous poet named William Blake influenced Morrison to name the band. "When the doors of perception are cleansed, things will appear to man as they truly are...infinite." Morrison read the line to the other three musicians and agreed to name their band "The Doors". The quote inspired the band and would stay in their head each time they played. They wanted the image of change and that they would be the ones to do it. They wanted their words spoken to the next generation. Morrison wanted to be successful as so did the others. They knew that sacrifices would have to come with band as well. Most attention was focused on Morrison, for he had the looks and a voice that could hypnotize many. In the beginning he was nervous about his voice, but as he gave himself into the music, his perception changed and eventually got to his head. However, Jim was well aware that the success of The Doors could never have happened without the fortunate talents of John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek. To be a poet meant more to Morrison than writing poems. It meant embracing the tragedy fate has chosen for you and fulfilling that destiny. In the end, after conquering America, after being shackled by the courts and laws of the land that he loved, he escaped to Paris, traditional home of so many expatriate artists, to pursue his life as a poet. But his body was too worn down, his heart too weak; he had already seen and done and drunk too much. He had lived life on his own terms, had reaped the rewards, and now the bill was due. His spirit was tired. Death was simply closer and easier than returning to America, to the endless succession of stages it demanded. Jim Morrison passed away in Paris on July 3, 1971. Pamela Morrison found him dead in the bathtub and his body was not to be seen by many others. His dying wish was to be remembered as a poet. The Doors tried to play without Morrison, but they did not succeed at all. After one album people truly knew that The Doors ended when Morrison died. So the remaining members decided they would take a break from living the life of a rock star. The drugs and the drinking were put to rest finally.
