The kids wait for their mother, questioning whether or not they will ever see her again. They wait for two days and on the third day, Dicey makes the decision of moving on their journey to Aunt Cilla's house. They must make it to Bridgeport without being caught by the authorities, relying on $7.00 for food. The children start their long dreadful journey to Aunt Cilla's house, going through many difficult courses. In one point, Dicey has no faith for her family and wants to give up. James urges her to continue for that was the only way for their family to stay together. When they get to a college campus on a rainy day, Dicey is sitting on a bench outside the dormitories.
