A detailed Summary of Homecoming

Many kids in our society are being put on the streets. Lack of love within their family is lost and they must find heir own way to survive. In Homecoming, there are four kids left in the parking lot of a shopping center. All they were told was that they were to listen to their older sister, Dicey.

Homecoming was written by Cynthia Voigt. It was published by Ballantine Books and was copyrighted in 1981, which had three editions. First, Fawcett Juniper Edition: May 1982, First Ballantine Books Edition: 1983, and the Thirty-second Printing: September 1993.

Cynthia Voigt was born 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the second child of four. Voigt was described as a good student who liked to read a lot. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Smith College in 1963. She received her Graduate Degree from Christian Brothers College. Voigt received her teaching certificate from Christian Brothers College. In 1974, she married Walter Voigt. She and Walter moved to Annapolis where she taught high school English. She and her family spent their summers off the Eastern Shore of Maryland, on Philpots Island, just off Matapeake. Voigt inhabits the traditions of an ocean shorewoman. The kids wait for their mother, questioning whether or not they will ever see her again. They wait for two days and on the third day, Dicey makes the decision of moving on their journey to Aunt Cilla's house. They must make it to Bridgeport without being caught by the authorities, relying on $7.00 for food. The children start their long dreadful journey to Aunt Cilla's house, going through many difficult courses. In one point, Dicey has no faith for her family and wants to give up. James urges her to continue for that was the only way for their family to stay together. When they get to a college campus on a rainy day, Dicey is sitting on a bench outside the dormitories. The kids were to sleep in a bush nearby, just in case a security guard comes by. While Dicey sits alone on the bench, a college student comes up to her and offers food and shelter for her family. She is eager to say no but it was a desperate time in their journey so she accepts. They stay with him for one night and they got to meet his roommate, Stewart. Stewart offers to take the kids to their destination and so the kids finally arrive at Aunt Cilla's house.
