Gender Roles
If I could hear myself speak in an age where gender seems to be two lines merging and immerging, I wouldn't think of myself as a product of this or that. I've always thought that greatness or depravity was not a trait of what we had or did not have, but how we handled that lack or abundance. Perhaps it's because I was born into this decade and not the earlier or the next; perhaps it's because the world's changing views have insinuated a pandemonium of ideas. All anybody had to do was pluck them out of stasis. There is much to learn in an assertion posed subtlety as a hypothetical situation. Also, there is much to question. In the process of maturing, we've been given a certain set of rules not only imposed upon us by the mere whim of parents (and perhaps their ignorance?) but also of culture's dictation; its sublime tradition. Then, the world has its complaints about that. And it's a handful. Should we think it unfair that tradition and physical attributes 'limit' the deeds and actions of women and men? Does society implement a rule for little girls to play with dolls and little boys with robots? Does it come, perhaps, when the majority clings to certain, unique aspects of their 'race' (male or female)?
This change has been driven not only by a basic need or a craving for equality on the part of women, but also by a realization that human beings are human beings. As I see it, it isn't so much as "Hey, we've been doing this all our lives. It's about time you took the yoke" as it is a plea for help on both sides of the coin. Many people say that equality is a must and that we should all strive for it. I agree. However, I also must stress the point that we already are equal. It's just not about what we have or do not have, since all weaknesses are paid for in strengths and vise versa. It's the how inasmuch as the when of the things we do, and how we use our parts. Being able to perpetuate in activities such as soccer and able to conduct a great shopping experience with only sequined bags and sandals to look at is a modern feat. It is the prance of our time, an achievement, and it opened my mind. Once again, we've adapted with the powers of thought and reflection. Cosmopolitan routines require men to cook and to nurture the children. It now entails women to work and they all needn't marry by the time they're thirty. We say culture builds a set of rules to come by and we've also learned that culture molds itself, adapts, and reinvents all its facets. It also dictates how we see people simply because it provides pre-drawn biases for aptitude and ability. In our world, in the now, unique potentials have been shifted from every plane, higher or lower. But I can't say that potential has been lessened. We choose to bring those potent
