The Fall of Richard Nixon
Richard Nixon first came in to Politics as very intelligent man, whose background was very respectable and humble. He graduated second in his class from Whittier College in 1934 and went on to Duke Law School. His first political involvement was when he returned from World War II (Aitken 5). Nixon decided to answer a call for someone to run against the five-term Democratic Congressman, Jerry Voorhis. Nixon seemed the perfect man for the job, and he was welcomed generously by the California Republican party, who considered him "salable merchandise (Nixon 1)." He had a good political mind which made him renowned as a fierce anti-communist. He also went as far as to make phone calls to voters saying that voting for Nixon was the best move because Voorhis was a communist. As one see, his need to attempt to secure his position had been there from the early years under the political moonlight. Richard Nixon was a paranoid man whose personal insecurities ultimately led to his demise.The tactic of straightforward accusations of communism was new at this time. Nixon's successful strategies caught the attention of the Republic national convention, he was chosen to him to be General Dwight D. Eisenhower's running mate. He was expected to do the dirty work behind the scenes. His work tapes which would have led to a conviction and impeachment but he resigned before he was impeached. After Nixon's re-election there was a domestic situation in which 17 Kent State students had been shot during and anti-war demonstration. The visible public dissatisfaction with the president, which could be seen outside the White House from 1970 on, exacerbated Nixon's famous insecurity and brought out what some of his aide's called Nixon's "dark side (Genovese)." This led to Nixon's paranoia which caused a concatenation of events through which he set up an illegally equipped group sent on missions to embarrass and discredit potential Democratic opponents. He also formed the Committee to RE-elect the President (CREEP), which collected $60 million, much in violation of existing campaign laws, and disbursed funds for "dirty tricks" which included tapping the phone of the chairman of the Democratic National Committee (Genovese).
