Drug abuse is a huge problem in the United States. The amount of people using drugs is increasing drastically with people starting or trying illegal substancesat a younger age. Drug abuse is the over use of legal and illegal substances. The abuse of drugs is the number one health related problem. (Ericson) According to a survey on drug abuse in 1998 showed that 78 million Americans older then the age of eleven have used an illegal drug. The same survey was conducted in 2000 and there were about 87 million Americans over the age of eleven that have used an illegal drug. That is 9 million people increase in just two years. The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) had said there were 527,058 drug problems in hospitals in 1997. In three years the amount of drug problems in hospitals increased to 601,776. There are many ways to prevent and help stop drug abuse. Companies are now putting on commercials telling people to stop doing drugs. There are also billboards, radio, newspaper articles, putting warnings on the back of legal drugs incase people don't know what will happen to them if they use that particular drug. One billion dollars a year is spent to help stop drug use and abuse. There are also places to go where people can get help and there is even people to call if they want to talk. (Ericson) Ecstasy is the number one club drug. This drug produces hallucinations. There is a good chance if someone takes ecstasy that they will die, but yet people are still willing to try it when they know their life is at risk. According to the National Household Survey on Drub Abuse there are at least 165,000 eighth graders who have tried ecstasy and that is just eighth graders.
