A comparative analysis of the American- and the Swedish education system

I have heard some Swedes say that the Swedish education system is the best in the whole world. However I also heard some American say that The United States has the best education system in the whole world. These statements actually confused me, who should I believe? Therefore I decided to make my own "investigation" about these school systems, hoping it will give me the right answer.

My goal with this essay is to get an idea about if and how the Swedish education system differs from the American education system and also try to find out if there are some resembles between the two systems. I will start my essay with a brief background about the education system in both countries, further I will analyse diversities and similarities in these systems.

Most Americans attend twelve years of primary and secondary school. With a secondary school ("high school") diploma or certificate, a student can enter college, university, and other professional schools.

The Swedish public school system is made up of obligatory and not obligatory schooling. Obligatory schooling includes regular required school, special school, and programs for pupils with learning disabilities. Not obligatory schooling includes the preschool class, upper secondary school, public adult education, upper secondary school for pupils with learning disabilities, and adult education for adults with learning disabilities.

U.S. students usually study a wide variety of subjects while in college. Many students do not specialize exclusively in one field until graduate school. Students in the first year are called freshmen, and they are sophomores in the second year. Freshmen and sophomores are known as underclassmen the junior and senior or third and fourth years, are the upper classes. Students in these years are known as juniors and seniors- upperclassmen. When they enter their junior year, they must choose a "major" field of study. They must take a certain number of courses in this department, or field. Each student is assigned a faculty advisor who teaches courses in the student's major field. This advisor helps the student select a program of study.
