One fat Summer
Robert Lipsyte grew up in New York City and attended Columbia University. He worked as a sports reporter for the New York Times from 1959 to1967 and as a sports columnist from 1967 to 1971. In 1964 he began covering professional boxing, most particularly the rise of Muhammad Ali's career. He used those experiences as the basis for his first young adult novel, The Contender, today widely considered a classic in the relatively new field of young adult literature. The Contender still enjoys a wide readership among teens nearly 35 years after its initial publication. Two other novels about boxing followed with The Brave and The Chief. In addition to sports novels, Mr. Lipsyte has written an autobiographical trilogy about three summers in the life of an adolescent boy in One Fat Summer, Summer Rules, and The Summerboy. This year, Robert Lipsyte won the Margaret A. Edwards Award from the American Library Association's Young Adult Library Services Award for his lifetime contribution to writing books for teenagers. One Fat Summer by Robert Lipsyte is a very good book for people that feel insecure about themselves and have low self-esteem. In the book a young boy name, Bobby who over
comes his fears of being fat and being bullied by Willie, one that is much stronger then him physically, but not emotionally. The basic theme of this story is to stand up for yourself no matter the situation. Willie, the antagonist of the story accidentally makes Bobby overcome his fears and stand up to him. In a way Willie could be a protagonist because he helps Bobby overcome his fears. Willie is a crazy person that doesn't know what he is doing. Bobby finds himself a hard low paying job. It doesn't matter to him how much it pays, but he wants to feel secure about himself that he can do something in his life except eat. The job is to mow a lawn for eight hours a day. The lawn mower becomes a symbol in the story because it helps him lose weight and feel more secure about himself. He conquers that fear pretty easily, but another fear awaits him. Well, at first I really did not like the story and then when I read more it stared to get good. I recommend this book to anyone that is insecure about themselves or there weigh. I learned not to make fun of the over weigh, and that they have feeling too. What I did not like about the book is the beginning it was boring. Well I hope you get a chance to read the book and enjoy. It all started in the summer when Bobby, an overweight fifteen year old is embarrassed to take his clothes off and swim in the beach because he is embarrassed that people would make fun of
