Alcohol and Teenagers

Today, alcohol is used for celebrations, such as parties and family reunions. Since alcohol comes in so many forms, such as wine, beer and hard liquors mixed with sodas and juices, there are many ways for people to enjoy drinking it and enjoying it. But some young adults and teens abuse alcohol. Teens seem to be getting a hold of alcohol at a younger and younger age. Since alcohol is used to celebrate and have fun, teens that abuse alcohol most likely have no idea of the affect alcohol and its abuse can have on their bodies.

I have chosen to do this report on alcohol and its abuse for many reasons. As a teen, I know that I will be faced with a decision to drink or not to drink. I know that it is more and more common for teens to be drinking alcohol at a younger age. But I do not want to be stupid and make the wrong choice, since the choice I make may determine how I spend the rest of my life. I want to know the affects of alcohol and its use, what happens to alcohol in the body and what dangers drinking can cause me. With this information, I hope to feel better prepared to answer the question, "Do you want a drink?" And I hope that the information I can share on alcohol and its abuse will help my friends and family a

When you drink and the alcohol level in your blood increases, certain organs are more seriously affected. The first organ to be affected is the brain. Alcohol in the blood enters the brain and kills and destroys brain cells. As drinking increases, the alcohol slows the reflexes and functions of the brain. This makes decision making slower and more difficult, makes reaction time slower and may even lead to unconsciousness, coma or death. Another important organ to be affected by alcohol use is the liver. This is because the liver's function in the body is to filter the blood. The liver is the body's defense against alcohol and is the organ that shows the most damage from life long alcohol abuse. Diseases of the liver, such as cirrhosis, a disease where your liver is damaged and ceases to function, are common causes of death in alcohol abusers.

An interesting story that I found about drinking and driving was the television show, "Just One Night". It told a story about a man named Tom Boyle, who was involved in a serious car accident while drinking. Mr. Boyle tells his story that he was never a heavy drinker, but chose to drink one night as a celebration for a good day at work. He met some friends at a bar and had some beer, but then had more drinks with other people in the bar that he had just met. The next thing that Mr. Boyle remembered was waking up in a hospital. He had chosen to drive after drinking and caused a car accident while driving at 100 miles per hour. A passenger in his car was killed, but Mr. Boyle did not even remember that he had anyone in the car with him. Even though Mr. Boyle was a dad and a businessman
