Scout, on the other hand growing up in a small, backwater town, did not see racism strongly. That is until her dad defended a black man accused of rape. Up until then her only contact with the African American race was time spent with their cook who was always treated kindly and looked upon as a member of the family. It was during this trial that Scout experienced some of the evils of the world. In the space of one summer she was awakened to racism, called a 'nigger-lover', and an attempt was made on her life by someone angry with her father for defending a black man. When the man was found guilty Scout felt sorry for him for having to go to jail for a crime he didn't commit. However, she did not realize her compassion should not just have been directed toward him and his family but towards all the other black people whose lives were as hard as Richard's.
