The Pearl

The book is called "The Pearl" and is written by John Stein-beck. It is a realistic fiction because most of the things it talks about could very well happen. The story takes place in a village that dives for pearls for a living called La Paz.

At the beginning Coyotito (Kino's son) was bit by a scorpion and was thought to die when taken to the town doctor who knew Kino had no way to pay for it and didn't try to help.

Kino had to dive for pearls even though is son was sick, but the song of the pearl was strong in Kino today. He went diving and picks the largest one. When he opens it up there for all to see was the glow of a perfectly shaped pearl. Instinctively Juana looks at Coyotito and sees that the swelling has gone down.

The doctor heard of this and came to see Coyotito putting on a sympathy act. He gave the baby a pill to make it vomit and said that it would make sure the baby was okay. Kino is a man with a lot of pride and that's what ends up getting him in so much trouble. He makes plans and will do any-thing to carry them through. Juana doesn't say much but her ac-tions say everything. And then there's Coyotito he's the son of Juana and Kino.

Soon they saw searchers who were behind them finding a resting-place. Two men slept while a third watched. Kino was ready to leap when he heard the cry of Coyotito. The men awak-ened and thought it was a coyote and shot towards the sound. Kino leapt with great power with his knife and killed the man with the
