The one who had it the worst was Crooks, because he was black, unlike George and Lennie, he had no chance to even try to get a new life. He was stuck as the Stable Buck and could not leave. Crooks wanted to follow George and Lennie with their plans for the house, but racism got in the way. When George gets annoyed with Lennie for telling Crooks about their plans, Crooks can tell that he is not wanted. After hearing this, he becomes bitter again and does not want to talk to anyone. He feels lonely and has no friends(which is another way he is discriminated in this book). He is also threatened by Curley's wife, so he is afraid for his life: "'you know what I can do to you if you open your mouth? I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain't even funny,' Curley's wife said to Crooks" (Steinbeck

Nearly all characters suffer from loneliness and so there are many scenes that show this. The two that probably show this the most is George and Lennie. They travel together to fight against lonelines, but there are several situations reminding us that they are still lonely. We can call George a lonely man because Lennie always forgets things he is told and so George does not really have someone to talk to. This seems to make George angry. Ironically George says to Slim in a later part of the novel, that guys who travel alone get mean: "I seen the guys that go around on the ranches alone. That ain´t no good. They don´t have no fun. After a long time they get mean. They get wantin´ to fight all the time." (Steinbeck 55).
