The Bean Trees

Everybody is a survivor in our own kind of way. Everybody has their own personal struggles that they deal with from day to day, some more serious than others. In the novel The Bean Trees, Barbara Kingsolver creates many characters that overcome their personal conflicts to become a stronger person. Three characters in specific are Lou Ann, Turtle, and Esperanza.

The first character, Lou Ann's conflicts are not as serious in comparison to the other two; nevertheless, they are problems that she must overcome. One of Lou Ann's many personal problems is her self-esteem. She is constantly putting herself down, no matter how good she looks, or how well she has done something. "I'm just totally screwed up, that's all there is to it" (p.210). Many people, including Angel's mother,


Mattie, Estevan, and Taylor help Lou Ann through this conflict, by providing support. Also, Lou Ann survives a divorce with Angel, and is left as a single mother, which is hard on her. However, again, with support from her friends in the community, she makes it through the rough times.

Esperanza's survival is much like Turtles in the way that many of the encounters have already come to pass. Esperanza has endured the hardships of being an illegal immigrant, who was forced to flee her country because she tried to change it for the good of everyone. She is helped to overcome this by her strong companionship with Estevan, as well as Mattie helping them avoid being caught.
