"Without friends no one would choose to live, though he had all other goodaE?(Aristotle). The Epic Poem Beowulf shows how men lived thousands of years ago. Like most other epic poems the readers learn lessons about life. This particular story follows Beowulf, who was on a mission to destroy the infamous monster Grendel. Beowulf succeeds and kills Grendel and becomes hero in the country. Grendel's looks, actions and attitude made him an outcast in society.

To begin with, Grendel was considered a monster because of his defects that did not make him look like a perfect human. " Grendle, who haunted the moors, the wild/ Marshes, and made his home in a hell not hell but/ Earth he was spawned in that slime.aE?(102). Back when this story was first originated of people of


that time if they had a birth defect like being cross-eyed, or even being left hand was reason to consider the person a monster. Grendel was never given a chance to succeed in life cause of his defects at birth. If Grendel was born with out the defects he could have been a solider and a noble hero just like Beowulf was. Grendel looks forced him from society's inner circle, and prevented him from becoming anything more than a monster.

Additionally, Grendel was an outcast cause of his attitude, Grendel never did try being friendly nor did he want to try, he enjoyed his fighting ways. Grendel's cocky attitude of being the biggest and not being able to be defeated in a fight was an attitude he earned to have because he has killed every man with out much of an effort.
