Lord of the Flies
In the book Lord of the Flies, Jack's rise to power was not an over night process. Since Jack and Ralph were the oldest on the island this meant one of these two individuals would naturally be elected chief. Jack and Ralph were at odds with each other from the first day they were marooned on the island. Both individuals had different ideas on how the island should be governed. Jack had the respect of the choir because he was the head boy of the choir, however, Ralph had the great conch shell, which he used to call all the boys together. Ralph gained the confidence of the rest of the boys on the island by using the shell to bring some order to their chaotic tribe, which showed his natural leadership abilities.Ralph was elected chief of the tribe, but permitted Jack to have control over the choir. However this act was just formalizing the control of the choir for everyone knew that the choir's loyalty already resided in Jack. "The group of cloaked boys began to scatter from a close line. Choir! Stand still! Wearily obedient, the choir huddled into line and stood there swaying in the sun" (Golding, pg 17). As the boys stood there in the sun, a few of them asked if they could sit down and one boy fell from exhaustion and J
Jack believed in a militaristic type of government. He agreed the island should have rules but he said "anyone who breaks 'em-' Whee-oh! Wacco! Bong! Doink!'" (Golding, Pg. 33). He thought those who broke the rules should be severely punished. Jack thought that people who could not follow the rules were weak people and he despised weaker people. Jack did not respect Piggy because he was weak and opposed everything about him. Piggy's constant opposition against Jack angered him greatly and eventually leads to the murder of Piggy. Jack's form of government shared some common characteristics as the government in which Hitler was the leader. They both believed in a strong dictatorship, and those who opposed their views suffered greatly. Hitler's followers executed many people who opposed Hitler's views just as Jack did with Piggy. Jack gained the support from the rest of the tribe by promising to hunt and have fun and also telling the tribe things that they wanted to hear. "Listen all of you. Me and my hunters, we're living along the beach by a flat rock. We hunt and feast and have fun. If you want to join my tribe come and see us. Perhaps I'll let you join. Perhaps not. (Golding, pg 160)" "Tonight we're having a feast. We've killed a pig and we've got meat. You can come eat with us if you like (Golding, pg 160)." Jack knows the rest of the tribe besides Ralph and Piggy do not really care about the rescue fire. Jack promises that if the rest of the tribe comes with him, the tribe will just hunt and have fun. Hunting and having fun all day appeals to many of the boys, and they start following Jack instead of Ralph. ack shouted 'All right then. Sit down. Let him alone' " (Golding, pg 17). Jack was a authoritative leader and the choir knew not to disobey him. Jack was convinced that he should be the chief of the entire tribe because he felt the job suited him the best. When Jack was appointed control over the hunters, he w
