Diabetes Mellitus Type 1
Diabetes is a common disease which has affect millions of people at a time. This is a disease which can be prevented but it is very difficult. Unlike any other kidney disease, diabetes mellitus is a complex disease which is not fully understood. It is a chronic disease which requires long-term medical attention to limit the development of its complications. It is done through the process of digestion; most of the food that we consume is eventually broken down, or converted, into a simple sugar called glucose. Glucose then passes into the bloodstream where it becomes available for the body to use for growth and energy. In order for glucose to be used by other cells in the body, a hormone produced by the pancreas, called insulin, is needed. In short it is due to abnormality of high levels of glucose in the blood. However, they have recognized diabetes as not just a single disease, but as a group of different clinically heterogeneous disorders that do not have any glucose tolerance. The term diabetes mellitus is also used to describe a syndrome which is characterized by many other disturbances of carbohydrates, fats, and protein metabolism (McCance, 2002, 640). It is an excessively expen
sive disease. The patients that had been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus accounted for "5.8% of the US population in 1997, or 15.7 million people. In that year the per capita cost of health care for people with diabetes was $10,071, while it was $2,699 for those without diabetes."
