There have been a great many miracle workers in the known history of this world, but Mahatma Gandhi was one of the most proficient. His great love for people provided an easy way for him to gain trust and bring peace and independence to all Indians. Although his marriage was rockier in real life than it was in the movie, you can still track his family's trials to his growth and ability to initiate civil disobedience. The strengh and richness of his character shines through his impoverished exterior. Mahatma Gandhi and his wife, Kasturbai, had a rough beginning. They married at 13 years of age and throughout the marriage Gandhi went though many changes, socially and mentally, and brought his wife and children along with him. When he first arrived in South Africa, Gandhi took his wife and children and expected them to act and live as good mannered English people. Then, as time went on and they moved to India, he expected them to live as everyone else, doing all work, including that of the untouchables. Gandhi's wife was upset at the idea of having to do the work of the untouchables, and tried to refuse to do it, which upset Gandhi, but finally she got used to the idea, and his ideas and beliefs became her own. Gandhi says about this ridding himself of English ways and ideas: "We must rid ourselves of the caste system."
