The True Heroes Of The Civil War
The Civil War is a well-known war. If you mention its name to someone, chances are, they will tell you that they have heard of it before. They might be able to tell you that it was between the rebel Confederate army and the Union army. They might even be able to tell you names of specific soldiers or officers who fought in it. However, chances are, they will not mention any African-American soldiers names. The Civil War took place in the 1860's; most people think that African-Americans had no role in the world, at this time, especially in an American war. People do not realize that even though most blacks were slaves when the Civil War began, they still played a major role in the war. The fighting of the African-American soldiers in the Civil War won the war for the Union, and therefore those soldiers deserve more credit and recognition than they actually received. Since most of the blacks were slaves, they had to work the land every day. They had to know the terrain of their master's land. This helped immensely. When they went to war, they knew where to hide; where and when to travel, without being detected. Colonel T.W. As the black soldiers received their "battle equipment", they were given broken and inferior guns, clothing, and tools. They were taken for granted just because they had once belonged to the white man. They were unsure why the Union army, the very same one that they had sworn allegiance to, was the ones supplying the faulted equipment. There was a "two-tier" paying scale. The whites were paid a lot more than the blacks, just because of their skin color (The Role of Blacks). They were also promised a forty-acre lot and a mule if they would fight, but after the war, they never received what they deserved (The Civil War). There were many different groups of blacks that were assembled, as a product of the war. There are many terms or names that each of these groups went by. The term When the south knew that it wouldn't be able to hold up much longer, it offered the slaves their freedom, if they would rejoin them, and now fight the Union. Very few accepted because they had become very loyal to the anti-slavery north. They also felt that it was wrong to help the people who had pushed them as slaves for years (The African American). There were never many black prisoners of war because most were captured while aiding their masters. While their masters were locked away, some were either resold as slaves while the rest were executed (The Role of Blacks). How could anyone kill someone just after they had proven themselves as useful fighters?
