Tradition has it that the Hebrews came from Mesopotamia around 2000 BC, and conquered the Canaanites. They were led by a man named Abraham, who had a close relationship with God and who he established as their father. Constant warfare resulted in a large number of Hebrews being enslaved by the Egyptians. A man named Moses assisted the captive Hebrew population in its hour of need, and around 1300 BC, he led them, it is said, back into Palestine. During this journey, Moses was given supernatural powers, which he used to evade the Egyptians, and was also granted the Ten Commandments from God. The Hebrews organized themselves into 12 tribes, with warrior-priest chieftains, referred to in the Bible as Judges. In about 1010 BC, they found a monarch in a ruthless warlord named Saul. After a few years, Saul's position was occupied by David, who founded Jerusalem as the capital of the Hebrew Empire. After going through intense torment from Egyptians, Babylonians, and other invaders, Hebrew people had several different gods to whom they worshipped.
