They call me the Wanderer

Every building started looking the same and the streets were blurring together as I walked the avenues of San Jose, Costa Rica. I was supposed to be at a university called ULACIT over an hour before, and I had the feeling that the other twenty-two Rotary Exchange Students had arrived just fine. As I continued wandering the streets in a desperate attempt to find this university, my feet were blistering and time seemed to fly. When I checked my watch, I couldn't believe that I was over four hours late. I still I had not called my host family or the gentleman in charge, Tomas. I knew that I had to find something that looked familiar to me, or I might be stuck wandering for the rest of my life. The sun was beating and sweat was dripping down my face and back. I was certain if I ever found my way back, I would pull all of Tomas' hair out with my hands. I am sure he could have given me better directions.

The bus started on the way home, and shortly, I was in front of my host house.

As I walked into my host house, a feeling of security swept over me. I knew that being home meant that the frustration of the day was gone, at least for that day. After being lost for a day, I had never been so relieved to lie down and rest my pounding feet.

As the day wound down, I figured I could just go back to my host house and finally rest. When I got back to the walking avenue--a long road with stores all the way down and where no cars are allowed--I sat in a restaurant and had a glass of soda. I needed to rest and unwind because despite the fact that I had wandered all day, I was stressed and my feet were pounding. While I watched people walk in and out of the restaurant, I started thinking. Thinking can be a good thi
